Until I moved to Germany in 2017, Austria was my second home as I had spent two great summers as a kid there. Growing up in semi-suburban America living in Innsbruck in western Austria was a dream. Suddenly I had the freedom to walk around the city on my own and even go see trains on my own at the Westbahnhof. I fell in love with the European public transit model with trams and buses that could take you anywhere that you was too far to walk. This experience was a catalyst in my decision move to Europe several years later. Since those trips in the early 2000s I have visited Austria many times since and now living in Munich it is just a short trip away. The country has alot to offer for rail enthusiasts with the spectacular Semmering Pass in the south, numerous narrow gauge lines and highly developed urban rail systems in many cities.
