There are some trips that you look back at and say, wow, did that really happen? Peru is that trip for me. In May 2017 fellow railfan Doug Koontz and I set off on what would be an epic one week trip, we covered both the PeruRail narrow gauge to Machu Pichu and the FCCA, treated to incredible hospitality on both railroads. The scenery itself would have been spectacular but the traditional rail photographs were far eclipsed by the unique experiences such as riding on the pilot of a locomotive through tunnels, high bridges and along precarious edges, saying nothing of getting to ride in a private business car with a 5 star chef cooking just for us as our train wound its way to the highest point on any mainline railway. I hope to have many more adventures in the future but I’m not sure anything will ever top Peru.
